The French designer Henri Mathieu, created this eccentric pendant in 1970. (Often wrongfully attributed to Louis Weisdorf.)
Mathieu produced an arsenal of striking chandeliers, often very baroque and finished with glossy materials like glass beads. This lamp belongs to a series, named ‘Luberon’, which is more sober in material but rich in form. Its play of light, shadow and space creates an architectural suggestion.
The extraordinary shape of this light sculpture brings to mind the sophisticated twirling structure of an escargot or the endless spiral staircase in an Escher drawing.
