With ‘Night-horse’ (°^°HIHA) from 2016, Dirk Zoete has added a new dimension to his sculptures which are the results of photographic performative sessions in the artist’s studio. At certain points during these sessions, he recognises a standstill that becomes the basis for new (temporary) figures or future sculptures.

"Can movement and standstill of a horse be gathered in one single drawing?"

Zoete has created his primitive-looking sculptures of horse-bodies after a series of drawings (‘Mountain Man’, ‘The Wild Bunch’, ‘Showing the corpse’), for which he was inspired by iconic stop-motion photographs and movies of horses in motion by the British photographer Eadweard Muybridge.

Nate Lights' Artist Editions is a project curated by Ben Van den Berghe.

Dirk Zoete (*1969 in Roeselare) lives and works in Ghent.

Although Dirk Zoete’s work includes sculpture, performance and even film, it remains deeply rooted in the logic of drawing. That is: it is shaped by the freedoms and restraints that come with the medium, and conversely uses the medium as a prism to look at art. Whatever drawing is or could be, or whatever space it occupies in an artist’s practice, the medium’s minimum, its threshold, is always the first touch: a dot that can stretch to a line, and from there on to shadings, cross-hatchings, planes etcetera. As soon as the instrument hits the surface, a potential space is created... (Excerpt from a text by Koen Sels.)

Dirk Zoete has exhibited, among others, at MARTa Herford, Be-Part in Waregem, SMAK in Ghent, W139 in Amsterdam, Kromus+Zink gallery in Berlin & Waldkirchen, KIOSK in Ghent, The Mothership in Antwerp, Teylers Museum in Haarlem, Croxhapox in Gent, STUK Kunstencentrum in Leuven, Galerie Ronny Van de Velde in Antwerp, KMSK in Brussels, The Baker Museum in Florida, Galerie Annie Gentils in Antwerp, Netwerk in Aalst and Voorkamer in Lier.
